I have been getting a lot of questions lately on how to successfully involve toddlers in arts and crafts projects. To answer this question, it is initially important to understand that Rudolf Steiner observed children as threefold beings guided by their head, heart, and hands. When incorporating art into your child’s rhythm, your child’s brain (head) makes connections through the process of creating art with their hands. Art is an innately joyful process and allows for highly effective learning to take place. That being said, I think the best way to involve your toddler is to simply expose them to art from an early age on and to give them the freedom to explore colors and shapes in a safe and nurturing environment. Here are a few tips:
Things might get messy. And that’s ok. Be sure to create a time and space that allow for authentic exploration and sensory experiences.
Use toddler friendly resources: There are several brands that create non-toxic and toddler friendly art supplies. We get our toddler supplies from Stockmar and @veggiebabyart . You can order Stockmar paints @bellalunatoys .
Choose toddler friendly projects: my favorite toddler friendly art projects are wet-on-wet painting (pictures), salt dough crafting, and homemade play dough. I will post a tutorial for these crayon resist Easter eggs in my story!
Let your child guide you: I have found that letting Emma guide me in her process leads to the most interesting and beautiful results. Perfectionism is overrated.
