Stained Glass Cookie Ornaments

Updated: Dec 31, 2020

These (super easy) stained glass cookie ornaments can be strung up as a garland or individually hung on your Christmas tree.

Materials:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup of salt

  • 1/2 cup of warm (!) water - helps the pendants to better maintain their shape

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

  • A rounded cookie cutter (I used a snowflake shape; a star or circle would work as well)

  • Rolling Pin

  • Bottle Cap (~1/2 inch diameter)

  • Wooden Skewer

  • Transparency Paper (I used this type from Nova Natural)

  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

  • Matte Modge Podge and a foam brush applicator

  • Thin thread or wire

Directions:

  • Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • In a bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of warm water (the ratio is 2:1:1).

  • Add a tablespoon of ground cinnamon to color the dough brownish.

  • Knead until a smooth dough forms.

  • Using a rolling pin, roll out your salt dough until it is approximately 1/8th of an inch thick.

  • Use a cookie cutter to cut out snow flakes, stars, or circles. Use the blunt end of the wooden skewer to puncture a hole through the top of each cookie.

  • Use a bottle cap (~1/2 inch diameter) to puncture a large(ish) hole through the center of each cookie - this is where your "stained glass" will go.

  • Place your cookies on a baking sheet (I lined my baking sheet with baking paper to prevent sticking)

  • Bake for 2 hours.

  • Once baked, let your cookies cool for 15 minutes.

  • Using a hot glue gun and glue sticks, glue differently colored transparency paper scraps to the back of each cookie.

  • Again using the hot glue gun and glue sticks, fill in the front of your hole with a thin layer of hot glue. This will create a stained glass effect.

  • Apply a layer of matte modge podge as a finish.

  • Let dry for 30 minutes

  • Thread a piece of yarn or wire through each skewer hole and either create a garland or individual Christmas ornaments.
