Moon Pendant

Updated: Dec 31, 2020

Today is my first ever Mother's Day and it has been the most special day ever. Becoming Emma's mama has been the greatest adventure of my life and has been filling my heart with so much gratitude. Yesterday, I spent the afternoon making these little salt dough moon pendants for Emma and her little friends. They are darling party favors or can be used as little back-to-school gifts. Super easy (and fast) to make.

Materials:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup of salt

  • 1/2 cup of warm (!) water - helps the pendants to better maintain their shape

  • 1 tablespoon turmeric

  • A moon cookie cutter

  • Rolling Pin

  • A medium sized brush (I use this brand)

  • A fine brush (I use this brand)

  • A set of Acrylic colors (I use this brand)

  • A wooden skewer

  • Yarn (I used Aunt Lydia's Metallic 10)

  • Glossy Modge Podge

Directions:

  • Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • In a bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of warm water (the ratio is 2:1:1).

  • Add a tablespoon of turmeric to color the dough yellow.

  • Knead until a smooth dough forms.

  • Using a rolling pin, roll out your salt dough until it is approximately 1/8th of an inch thick.

  • Use the moon cookie cutter, to cut out half moons. Use the blunt end of the wooden skewer to puncture a hole through each moon.

  • Place your half moons on a baking sheet (I lined my baking sheet with baking paper to prevent sticking)

  • Bake for 2 hours.

  • Once baked, let your moons cool for 15 minutes.

  • Using a medium brush and a set of Acrylic colors, add a layer of yellow paint to the front side of each moon (the backside is already yellow from the turmeric... so no need to paint). Let dry for 15 minutes.

  • Using a fine brush and a set of Acrylic colors, draw on a mouth, a cheek, and an eye (see pictures below for inspo).

  • Let dry for AT LEAST 30 minutes and apply a layer of glossy modge podge (make sure that your paint is actually dry before applying the modge podge to prevent smearing).

  • Thread a piece of yarn through the hole.
