Bring autumn into your home by crafting this colorful leaf garland.
Materials:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup fine salt
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons turmeric
Leaf shaped cookie cutter
Wooden skewer
Colors to decorate the leaves: My husband and I used acrylic colors, our 10 month old daughter used Stockmar crayons
Thin golden wire or string
Beads to attach the leaves
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a bowl, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of warm water (the ratio is 2:1:1).
Add two tablespoons of turmeric to color the dough yellow.
Knead until a smooth dough forms.
Using a rolling pin, roll out your salt dough until it is approximately 1/8th of an inch thick.
Use a leaf shape cookie cutter to cut out your leaves.
Place your leaf shapes on a baking sheet (I lined my baking sheet with baking paper to prevent sticking) and make sure to use the dull end of a wooden skewer to puncture a hole through each leaf.
Bake for 2.5 hours.
Once baked, let your leaves cool for 15 minutes.
Color your leaves with either acrylic colors or crayons.
Use thin golden wire or string to thread up your leaves. I used large wooden beads to create some additional dimension.
