Classic Balloon Lantern

Updated: Dec 31, 2020

Balloon lanterns are a fun craft to do with the entire family. The process is a bit messy, so be sure to use a tarp or another type of crafting surface when making balloon lanterns.

Materials (per lantern):

- 1 balloon

- 3 sheets of transparency paper (I got my transparency paper from Nova Natural)

- Matte or Glossy Modge Podge

- Modge Podge applicator or brush

- Scissors

- Sharp X-Acto knife (optional)

- X-Acto knife crafting surface (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Tear three sheets of differently colored transparency paper into small fragments. I decided to go with a gradient (yellow to orange to red) in order to enhance my lantern's glow.

  2. Using a foam brush, apply Modge Podge to the bottom half of a half-way blown up balloon. Adhere the transparency paper fragments to the Modge Podge.

  3. Apply another layer of Modge Podge on top of the transparency paper. The thicker the layer of Modge Podge, the more stable your lantern will be.

  4. Let your lantern dry for at least 1 hour.

  5. Once completely dry, carefully pop the balloon and remove the balloon from the interior of your lantern. Toss the balloon.

  6. Using a pair of sharp scissors, trim the uneven edges of your lantern.

  7. OPTIONAL: You can now use a sharp X-acto knife and X-acto knife cutting surface to cut small stars or moons into your lantern. I placed the lantern face down in order to better cut out the stars.

  8. Use additional Modge Podge and a foam brush, glue small pieces of yellow transparency paper to the back of each star.

  9. Use a tea light or battery powered tea light to illuminate your lantern.
